Slave to War: Exclusive Snippet #2

Here’s an exclusive excerpt of SLAVE TO WAR:

“This isn’t going to do anything,” Michael said, coming to me as well. “All it will do is create chaos. They’ll seize control again. No one will stand against them except the drug and crime lords. No one will fight-“

“No one?” I replied hollowly.

I let that linger in the room for a moment, letting them realize just what was in store. They hadn’t yet realized what I was planning. If Nacin needed a savior, they were going to get one. But they were also going to get the bad and the ugly with it; that being me.

“No,” Michael said, taking my other hand as Max shook against me. “You can’t. Don’t let them do this to you.“

“I warned you, Michael,” I murmured, brain planning my next step. “You don’t know me as well as you think you do. The city needs exactly what it created; its vigilante assassin has come back to roost. If they want a slave to war, they’re going to get it!”

Slave to War – An Exclusive Sneak Peek

Hi everyone! Just a few more days until Slave to War is here! Wanted to give you an exclusive sneak peek before the book is released. This is the prologue the story, so not too much for a spoiler for ya!

“Where is she?!”

The terrified-looking secretary leaned away from her desk as General Cain McRattin suddenly lunged and grabbed her by her shirt collar, losing his patience. Now nose to nose, he bore down on her, causing her to to drop the phone in fright.

“Call Rogee and tell him if he doesn’t cough Rain up this instant, I’m going to tear his city apart from the inside out!” he snarled, shaking her roughly. “I know he has her! I’m not putting up with the runaround anymore. Either get him on the phone or this is going to get ugly…”

Her eyes widened as his grip tightened around her shoulders. “I’m sorry, General, but I already inquired about her to my boss multiple times and the Prime Minister insists he had nothing to do with Sierrenna’s disappearance. Maybe she left voluntarily,” she stuttered and then gulped as he shook her. “I can leave him another message-“

“That’s bullshit!” he roared, icy blue eyes narrowing dangerously. “She was abducted! I have it all on security footage and the license plate of the vehicle that took her belongs to Rogee!”

“Cain,” Rig inserted calmly, reaching over to attempt to pry Cain’s fingers off of her. “Let her go.”

“She’s full of crap,” Argon added, shooting her a disgusted look as Cain reluctantly released her. “She’s not going to talk. Let’s blow. If Rogee won’t answer our calls, then maybe he’ll respond to us releasing the evidence linking him to your father’s murder. How about that, bitchface?”

That seemed to get a rise out of the secretary. She shook, mouth opening and closing for a minute while all four soldiers glared at her. “Look, I have searched the records myself for this Sierrenna, but we have no records in our system of such a person inside the government database.”

“Then how do you explain all the photographs in the paper?” Ray demanded, slamming her fist on the counter while Rig nodded. “Or the security footage from the nuclear incident?! She was chosen by the state for the mission! There has to be a record somewhere!”

The secretary shook her head. “Then someone has erased all records of her existence. I’m sorry, but I can’t help you. If she is still alive, you’re going to have to find her yourselves.”

Cain stood up with a start as she folded her arms, refusing to talk further. Storming out of the room, he headed outside of the building to escape all of the lies. He slammed the door shut and headed out to the car. All was quiet as he muttered under his breath mutinously and dragged his hands through his hair.

Seven long days had passed since Rain had been taken. All evidence indicated that his love was beyond his reach, but he refused to give up. He had been through the city and across the desert to MoiRai, but still no sign of her had been found… until this morning, that is.

Argon had called. A woman was found washed up on the shore of the river on the other side of the city. Limbs missing, artificial organs, innards and eyes cut free to steal the technology, she wore Rain’s violet dress from the night of Michael’s party. Even the leather jacket that Cain had tossed over her shoulders had washed up, covered in white blood. A gang’s insignia had been burned into her forehead as a grim signature.

His stomach sank thinking about it. It was so grizzly that Argon warned him to stay away, but he had gone and he was glad he had. Sorry for the poor soul sacrificed to throw him off of Rain’s trail, but relieved because it hadn’t been her.

The true Rain had a small scar under her chin that he’d noticed one night while she was asleep, unaware of his study. It was almost like a small star on her silky copper skin. It was missing from the corpse. That they couldn’t fake. This woman also had pierced ears. Rain didn’t. She had no brand on the back of her neck and many of her other scars weren’t present either.

The empty eye sockets made him sick with disgust and brought images of Rain’s lifeless body to mind. But that was too much to bear now.

Determination rekindled, he spent the day redoubling his efforts and still came up with nothing. He knew she was still out there somewhere in Nacin. Rogee wouldn’t send her far. He’d want her right under his nose to keep an eye on her. She was too dangerous to leave without supervision, but with her new technologies too valuable to kill.

Cain sighed, forcing himself to take a deep, calming breath. It wasn’t easy. Every breath hurt knowing he had failed to keep her safe. If he never shared the locket with her, she wouldn’t have been dragged into this mess. She would never have discovered the dark secret Rogee was so desperate to hide and would still be a free woman.

Rain’s face swam in front of his eyes, thinking of how her eyes crinkled at the corners when she cracked a rare smile. He thought of how her violet eyes fluttered closed and how she shivered when he finally confessed his feelings for her, overcome with emotion because no one had ever loved her before. Those eyes were the windows to her soul and the very thing that had captured him as a boy. They held endless pain but also a sea of yearning for someone to reach out and gain her trust again.

So close…. If only they had had more time he was sure she would have come to trust him, to give in to his love completely. And even better, for her to love him back.

He longed to hold her, feel her heart fluttering under his fingers again, responding to his touch. The raw feeling of their one and only kiss, stolen in the moment just before she had been taken from him, was just a bare memory now. The moment that should have held so much promise for them was now a reminder of his failure.

An acid desire for revenge warred with his forced sense of calm. If anyone touched one hair on her head they were going to be a cadaver before long. He’d sworn to himself that he’d keep her from ever being hurt again. Cain hated that he’d failed in his promise. She had already suffered beyond measure.

Cain looked up as Argon came out of the building, heading to his side. Argon shook his head, pulling his hood up. “The sec knows nothing. She didn’t even know about the body that washed up this morning. I also inquired about Michael. All she can say is he was sent to a prestigious prep school, but we both know that’s a bunch of shit. They have their stories straight and they’re sticking to ‘em. Xorratti is in Mercaine so we can’t question him either.”

“We have to find her,” Cain said, putting both palms on the hood of the car and exhaling heavily.

“We will,” Argon replied wearily, patting his shoulder. “Rain’s strong. She’ll be fine. Rogee must be desperate to hide her if he’s willing to try and fake her murder.”

But he could hear the lie in Argon’s voice. Argon already thought that it was too late to find her. He just didn’t dare to say it straight to Cain’s face. And he was probably right but Cain refused to give up.

Both men stood for a minute, enmity strong for the city that had betrayed them. They both knew what the elites had planned and had no idea how to stop them. All they could do for now was keep searching and wait for the opportune moment to bring Rogee down.

Argon shifted, looking at Cain suddenly. “You really do love her, don’t you?”

Cain didn’t answer, still looking out over the cityscape before them. His eyes narrowed, knowing that Argon didn’t need an answer to that rhetorical question. He already knew the truth, as did everyone else that they had interrogated over the last week. And they all had the same bleak look in their eyes, thinking that it was a lost cause to keep searching.

“Call Dantenn,” Cain ordered, turning away. “Check again to make sure Rain hasn’t been there.”

Argon nodded and headed off as Cain looked out over the city once more. Cain gritted his teeth, squaring his chin as the dawn came over the city of Nacin.

“I’m coming for you, Rain. I will find you,” he vowed to no one in particular as the drizzle fell, dampening the smog. “I will find you.”

The Reviews Are Rolling In: Wings of Caligo

The reviews are coming in for Wings of Caligo. Here’s what one fellow author had to say:

In this excellent story, a story which shines light on interpersonal relationships and the relationship between two societal factions, Ms. Heron-Heidel weaves an intelligent and compelling tale which, if one wants to see what she’s actually saying, teaches us why all of humanity should and must tear down the walls that we have put up between each other in order to make a better world. It is vastly different than her first book, but that is fine with me. Why? An author, and an author of a caliber such as she, should have a range which can handle whatever genre they write in. This story exhibits the inescapable fact that Ms. Heron-Heidel is a force to be reckoned with any genre she may choose to write in. Once again, Ms. Heron-Heidel, KUDOS TO YOU! Another fine job.

– T Garth Connelly, award winning author of the Pathos

Thank you, Mr. Connelly! You can visit his blog and read the full review here.

Wings of Caligo is available on Amazon in Kindle Unlimited, ebook form, and in paperback editions. Happy reading!

The Attack – An Exclusive Excerpt of Wings of Caligo

Here’s another exclusive excerpt of Wings of Caligo:

“But Matt wasn’t looking at me anymore. He was glancing around warily. “Ken,” he said in a low, tension-filled voice. “Why are the cabbages dying?”

I looked where he was pointing and saw frost creeping up the plants, coming from the road. It meant only one thing. There was only one person who affected the air in this way. He was coming.

“No, no, no!” I cried, twisting about looking for the source of the cold and shoving Matt toward the trees. “We’ve got to go! Lord Ricard is coming!“

A force slammed into my back, pummeling me into the ground. Dirt met my face and a deep growl snarled out from whatever was pinning me to the ground. A nasty, musty smell registered in my brain, and I knew what it belonged to. It sniffed up along my ear, hinting at its plan. Death crawler. Definitely a large and very dominant one.

“Matt…” I said slowly, wondering how it had snuck up on us. “Run.”

I knew exactly what I had to do. Flip it over and crunch the life out of it. I could feel the adrenaline welling up in my veins, instinct urging me what to do. But I never got to do it. Unfortunately, Matt had other plans. He threw a cabbage at its head, distracting it.

“Hey, ugly face. Pick on someone your own size!” he yelled tauntingly. The crawler screeched at him angrily, releasing me from under its huge paws. It stalked toward him, hissing. He gulped. I don’t think he had quite thought through his plan. Now that he had its attention, he had no idea what to do.

“Uh, Ken,” he called, dropping the second cabbage in hand. “Now would be a good time to do something fairy-like.”

I didn’t have time to agree as I rolled under the creature and drew the dagger from my hip. I slit its throat from side to side, hot blood dropping on my face as it wheezed a last growl and fell on top of me dead. I threw it off and stood as more dark growls filled the clearing. There were three more advancing toward me and one going after Matt. My job was getting more difficult by the second.

The dagger clutched in my hand was itching for more blood. It got its wish as it buried itself into the flank of the nearest creature. I retrieved it as I ran past, heading for the one still pursuing Matt. The two I hadn’t dispatched yet were still on my tail. But I never reached my destination.

I was grabbed from behind and the cold edge of steel put up against my throat. The breath was knocked out of me and I felt fear awaken within me as another terribly familiar scent filled my nose.

“Well, well. Who are we?” a snide voice hissed in my ear. “Don’t you know it’s a crime punishable by death to kill a death crawler in my lands, beautiful?”

“Zeke,” I breathed in horror, now realizing just how much danger we were in.

“So you know my name,” he said, sounding disgustingly pleased. “Say it again.”

“What?”

“My name,” he said, pressing the blade harder against my throat. He inhaled along my ear lasciviously. “That of the future king. It sounds so delicious coming off of those lips of yours. Say it again.”

I nearly gagged at the lewd innuendo in his voice. But I knew I needed to buy time so I could make a move. “Zeke,” I muttered in a breathy whisper.

“Oh, I like that,” he said. “What’s your name, señorita? Why don’t we adjourn to a more hospitable location? You may yet escape your punishment if you please my every desire-“

His words turned into a shriek as I stabbed the dagger into his thigh and jerked it upwards, elbowing him in the gut. I attempted to run to Matt who was fending off the remaining crawler by beating the hell out of it with a piece of wood. But Zeke anticipated my move and yanked me back against him.

“If you think that’s enough to throw me off, bitch,” he growled at me, all traces of playfulness gone, “then you’ve got another thing coming. Think of this more as… foreplay.”

“I’d rather die!” I hissed struggling to break free.

“All right then,” he said, sounding even more pleased. Evidently he liked the idea of killing me even more than the other activities he was proposing. “Even better.”

I felt the blade start to move and squeezed my eyes shut. Game over. I wouldn’t even have time to shift before he slit my throat. I heard a yell from far off. Matt’s yell of panic barely registered through my brain as I prepared for the end. I hoped he didn’t go after Zeke after I was gone. Then we’d both be dead.

But fate intervened. “Enough, Ezekiel!”

I sagged in relief as Lord Ricard’s voice rang out into the clearing. I had thought that was going to be it for me. Zeke stopped and a hiss escaped past his lips. Disappointment radiated off of him. “Tough luck, señorita. Looks like we’re going to have to continue this later.”

He threw me to the ground and I landed with a splatter into the mud. My blood and the neon purple blood of the crawlers mixed beneath me. I was healing rapidly but I could still feel where the knife had cut into my neck.

Two figures on horseback rode toward us. The one on the black horse stopped a few feet in front of me. I couldn’t see anything beyond the dark green brim of the hood. For a second I thought it was Dare, but I quickly discounted the thought. The figure was enormous. As an opponent, they would have the advantage of size. Not good. I was outnumbered as it was. I’d have to be fast if I took them on. The person said nothing and held back as Ricard rode forward.

The king was on his albino horse and he didn’t look happy. His eyes traveled over the dead crawlers, Zeke, and then onto me. I glanced away before he could look me directly in the eye. I would be thoroughly done if he realized who I was. It was too late now to change my face with my powers.

Matt was visible from the corner of my eye. He was all right, his eyes fixed on me with worry. I spat out a mouthful of dirt and nodded to let him know I was okay. He nodded back and fixed his murderous glare on Zeke’s back.

“Dad,” Zeke drawled, throwing his arms out in a dramatic welcome that I suspected was meant as a diss. “I didn’t know you were out and about.“

“Save it,” Ricard snapped dismissively. “Who is she?”

“I have no idea,” he replied airily. “You usually don’t care who I kill since I’m not your worthy heir, so I didn’t know I had to ask. Who are you, sweet cheeks?”

“Leave her alone,” Matt said loudly, causing the remaining crawler in front of him to start growling again. “She was protecting me-“

“A human?” Ricard said, sounding surprised. “Here in Caligo? Interesting. I’ll get to you in a second, boy. Your name, girl?”

“Amarylis Mina,” I lied with no hesitation, roughening my voice. I had had that alias prepared from day one since I had gotten here. It was so ingrained in me it sounded perfectly true. I didn’t dare glance up at either of them. Zeke still hadn’t seen me from the front, so he had no idea who I was. If he saw me, he’d recognize me, and I’d be trapped.

“And what were you doing killing death crawlers? It is punishable by law-“

“They attacked us first, sire,” I said, cutting across him. “Self- defense.”

“The death crawlers are under our command, peasant. They wouldn’t attack without being provoked,” Ricard replied snottily. But I could tell he meant it. He thought they were totally in his control. That wasn’t good.

“Do you really think I’d go attacking a scourge of crawlers for kicks?!” I snapped. “They probably smelled Matt and came after us.“

“The human is of no consequence,” Lord Ricard snapped back, sounding bored. “You should have let them proceed. What were you two doing out here anyway?”

I bristled internally at that comment on Matt’s behalf, but knew I’d better keep my mouth shut for his safety. “Cabbages,” I muttered through gritted teeth. “Wild cabbages. We’ve got to eat something, sire. There’s nothing else-“

I cried out in pain as Zeke delivered a sharp kick to my ribs.

“Don’t talk back to the king,” Zeke spat.

I bit my lip to hold back further sounds. He had cracked a few of my ribs, but they were healing rapidly. He must have been wearing steel- toed boots to inflict such damage. He had smashed the skin, too. More blood trickled through my clothes into the mud, joining the blood coming off my chin. I curled up into a ball, waiting for the agony to stop. Tears escaped from my eyes as the pain started fading from my mind.

A soft nuzzling on the side of my face caught my attention. It was comforting in a way, as it was sniffing me. Hot breath blew on my neck. I looked up to see a very large set of nostrils paired with a huge set of familiar brown eyes staring back at me. Another warm puff blew on my face. I forgot the pain for a moment, shock taking over my mind. I recognized those eyes.

“Cerberus,” I breathed. The horse mouthed lightly on the end of my nose with affection. I almost smiled but then froze as realization washed through me. If this was Cerberus, then where was his master?

I glanced up slowly through my lashes, sincerely hoping I wasn’t making a huge mistake. The dark figure didn’t move as the horse continued to inspect the top of my head. But I could tell they were watching me closely, just by the downward tilt of the hood. I cocked my head, trying to get a better look. It was hard getting past Cerberus who was still sniffling at my cheeks.

A hauntingly familiar pair of dark green eyes met mine for a split second, glowing even though no light fell upon them. They widened and I forgot to breathe. Trepidation washed through me as I came to the blunt realization of who was before me. Dare hadn’t realized who I was until that moment just as I hadn’t recognized him…”

Scientific Breakthrough – The Giza Pyramids Channel Energy

I was right!

How crazy it is it that one of my scientific, er hem, ‘fictional’ theories in one of my novel series is correct? I’m still reeling around in my chair as I write this! As of tonight, there is actually scientific proof that the plot line is not entirely a work of fiction on my part, even though I started writing the book over three years ago!

In the first and second book in my Vaktare of All Realms series, I wrote that the main characters use the great pyramids (and other ancient structures), to channel energy up through the earth’s crust to perform Tru healings. Well, cue the trumpets because scientists have proven my book’s plot line to be true!

As reported by the Daily Mail just today, scientists have discovered that the famous Giza pyramid can concentrate electric and magnetic energy in its chambers and below its base, giving rise to distinct pockets of higher energy.

I guess that I’ll have to move the series from being a work of fantasy to being in the genre of science fiction now. Er hem. Please pardon my bad writer’s joke. I’m flying on cloud nine here!

And if any of you doubt me and don’t you dare suggest I’m just a copycat, I have copies dating back to 2015 and even further back for the first drafts on the novel. When one of my readers said that she felt my plot lines often had a premonition-like edge to them, apparently she wasn’t kidding!

If you want to read more about the groundbreaking discovery, make sure to check the article out on the Gizacan pyramid here. If you’d like to hear more about my Vaktare of All Realms series, book one ‘CURSED’ being released this fall, make sure to check it out here.

Thanks for reading! If you enjoyed this post, make sure to sign up for my email Newsletter. You’ll immediately get a free copy of my best selling novella STILL DEATH just for joining up!
