Books, Kidney Transplants and 2023: The Future

Greetings readers. This author is writing to you with a new kidney! Praise the Lord, I got my transplant at last. In fact, I got the call to come to the hospital while writing my last blog post to you all. It’s been quite the ride here on my end, but hopefully in 2023 I can get you the sequels I have been promising.

New Books

So while the Destiny in the Shadows trio is off in edits with my editor (three books, good grief), I’m working on my next standalone release. This one is more sci-fi, though it centers on the Phantom of the Opera tale. It’s a standalone, so it should prove to be a bit less long (*cough cough* it never turns out to be small for this author. What starts as a small project usual morphs as the characters scream at me). It definitely has a strong cyberpunk twist with a huge focus on AI, a hotly contested issue of 2023 as is.

As for Destiny in the Shadows, the next three books should be released in short succession to each other. Originally, it was one large megabook, but I felt it was getting too large. So, as authors often do, I added even more to each book. I can attest that they are action packed and the cliffhanger you have all been after me about from Slave to War will finally be answered.

The series of chapters I released from Del Muerta in 2020 are also coming to you in book form. The story I began will progress through Aiyla Gobcheva’s eyes, coming to Amazon this year. As my editor said, “Welcome to the blood bath in Dejado Atras‘. It will be one Hell (Infierno to be precise) of a bumpy ride! The first two books in the Sanctum of Hell series will be Helice and Del Muerta.

Kidney Transplants And A Plea

Also, as I am sure you’ve noticed, I used a dreaded word in the previous paragraphs. For those of you who follow me on social media, you’ve probably already heard I was on dialysis. Back in May 2021, my kidneys failed and I was going for treatments at least three days a week; many weeks being five treatments every seven days.

Most dialysis patients will attest that this isn’t a lasting solution. Dialysis is hell on the body. To keep going in life for the long term, they need a kidney transplant. And that means a donor.

When my kidneys failed, I was astounded to learn that over 100,000 people need a kidney at this time. And only about 6,000 people donate every year. Too many perish without ever getting the kidney they need, waiting years on the list to no avail. The average wait is from six to nine years. Many people desperately need a donor, but few come forward for a person they do not know. Those who do are known as Good Samaritan donors.

My donor was a gift of life from someone after they passed on and I am forever grateful for that heroic gift. Much like any other after death donor, they may have saved as many as nine people via different organs such as kidneys, heart, lungs, liver, etc.

So this is me asking any of you would consider being a donor, either in life or to be listed in the registry for after you have passed on for those who need a new organ. Any age is accepted if you are determined to be in good enough health to donate. If you cannot or will not, I would ask that you spread the word that many people are in need of one. Word of mouth has been proven to be the best way to spread the word.

If you would like more information or would like to consider donating, please call Yale New Haven Kidney Transplant Center at 866-925-3897 if you are in the New England or visit https://www.kidney.org/transplantation for more information.

Thanks for listening to me. I hope to make 2023 a good year and pray it will be equally good for you, my dear readers. God bless you all!

Update on Destiny in the Shadows – Blood War, Warlord and War Path

Featured

Sometimes a project is so complex and close to your heart that it consumes all your time. The fourth installment of the Destiny in the Shadows series has been no exception.

Many of you have been asking what became of the series since there has been such a lag between books. I released a Christmas novella in 2020 from Dantenn’s POV to break the silence and many of you loved it. But still you demanded to know what became of Sierrenna. Or more affectionately known, Rain. *SPOILER ALERT* Plus her baby.

And I don’t blame you. I’ve missed them, too. You see, what exists on paper is truly real in an author’s head. I deal with the main characters every day to the extent they almost come to life. Sometimes the things I originally plot out at the beginning of a first draft are refused. I realize that the action I’d originally planned would not be something a character would do. Cain was originally supposed to be a villain, you know. And he said to screw that.

War Machine was no different from any of my other stories. My first concept is usually very different from the finished product. And my science fiction novels are more difficult for me to write because I am literally inventing a new, unseen world. I must explain every bit of their society, their cities and how their new technologies work. With my urban fantasy novels, they are all based in the now. The settings are simply the world we live in and need to be much less detailed in certain respects.

What was once one book quickly morphed into two the more I worked on it. And those two books rapidly each escalated to over 150K words. The original title Blood War became Warlord: Scorpius (part one of the original manuscripts). The second half became Blood War: Defiance or more precisely, book five. The story simply could not be told on one book.

Another spoiler: Plus Cain quickly took to demanding that he get chapters from his point of view and I agreed it was what the story needed What he resented was the long wait that it has been the journey from my mind to the page

2021-2022 has been an intense roller-coaster for me and my family. I have experienced many health challenges that impacted my ability to work with as much focus as need for this series. But with happiness, I can announce that both books are in the hands of my editor. In fact, I am now working on the book directly after them, so three books can be released in relatively quick succession.

They will be in your hands soon, as well as the first Sanctum of Hell series book: Helice. It was previously published as a weekly serial during the Covid-19 pandemic and has since been vastly expanded upon. Again, the finished product is very different from the original. Call me a perfectionist, but I do not stop until I see a story as perfect. And again, what was once a simple novel became a triad of epic books. Book two Del Muerta is largely complete.

I also am in the process of bringing a fan request to life upon request. Many of you wished to read Rain’s early backstory when she was in training as an assassin. That book will not be in your hands for a while, but I can tell you it will be in the next year or so, providing my health complies with my wishes.

Hopefully this summer will be a great one not only for you, my reader, but also a better one for me. I am sending my love and hugs.

Love, Author Maggie Lynn

Here’s a special sneak peek

Prologue

A furious rattling roused me from my stupor.

I blinked confusedly, trying to adjust to the blackness around me. Instead of my pillow, my head was resting on dry sands. The sun rising over the horizon told me that this definitely wasn’t my bedroom, nor was I alone in my bed.

Well, I wouldn’t say alone. The irked rattlesnake at my feet paused its rattling long enough for me to scuttle backward in alarm. It slithered off with a curse sent in my direction after I sent it a hasty apology for disturbing it. Then I was alone in the low dawn light, the dusty soil dry and sharp under my palms. I was laying completely alone in the center of a very large, open expanse of desert.

Or was I? I could hear echoes in my mind that didn’t seem to belong to me. But then they were gone. Had I imagined the whole thing? Or was I losing my mind?

How had I gotten here? I had no memory of leaving my room in my grandfather’s underground compound. Last I remembered, Brin was carrying me to bed after dozing off during a movie, pressing a kiss to my cheek. He tucked me in as I fell asleep.

As I stumbled backward, I came into a whole new kind of horror. I recognized this place. This expanse of desert was one I’d been to only once, two months before. The debris may have been gone from the landscape, but the cactuses remained singed by the fires that had burned here. I would have recognized it anywhere, my insides constricting in panic like a vice.

I was standing on the edge of the crash zone where I’d absorbed Shitheed’s life force. But it couldn’t be. He was dead. I watched him die.

Yet as the dawn spread over the morning sky, I knew without a doubt that something was still to be unearthed. The restlessness in my soul was reawakening with gusto.

It wasn’t over. Somehow I had been brought back here. The question was why and, even better, how. A thousand voices sang in my head, “It’s not over. It’s just begun…”

But what could it be? Shitheed was dead.

Or was he…
