The Vampire’s Handmaiden: Exclusive Excerpt #2

“If my plan works,” Dune continued, “he’ll lift his hypnosis to find out what we’ve done. Once he does, when you remember all this – remember me – I want you to make a decision. You need to decide what you want. If you call out for me, I will come for you and break you free. I promise you I will. I won’t let him take you again. Never.”

“And if I don’t remember?” I asked, sensing he had moved closer.

“Then I’ll find another way to free you,” he swore.

I looked at the obscured man, still unsure. All of this mattered very little considering I doubted Remy would ever let me go. “And what are we supposed to have done?”

“This,” he murmured huskily, invisible hands cupping my cheeks.

I shivered as my lower lip was traced. “What‘re you-?”

My question broke off with a low gasp as lips kissed the corner of my mouth, then along my jaw. I trembled, eyes closing and breath hitching in my throat as he feathered kisses under my ear, traveling lower with every brush of his lips against my skin.

Despite the bizarreness of the situation, not being able to see the man whose hands were encircling my waist and all but dragging me to him, I found myself swayed by the intoxicating feeling of his touch. A thrill went up my spine, wondering just where this moment would lead. On some level, it felt very wrong not knowing who was touching my body. But on another one, it felt so right; too good to tell him to stop.

One arm bowed my body to him, letting me feel the planes of his chest. My hands tightened on the chair arm rest, resisting the urge to reach out to touch him. To pull him even closer, to feel his body against mine.

As I gave in to the feeling, I tilted my head back to give him better access as he kissed my collar bone. Lower and lower he went, down between my breasts and across my stomach. With every kiss, I grew steadily hotter, feeling his lips through the thin, cool silk of my shirt. I trembled as his fingers dipped below the waist of my skirt and I fought to breathe as his lips came back to my ear, his hands lingering on my body and shaking over my skin.

“Choose us,” he rasped in my ear, his voice rough with desire. ”I will come for you.”

The Swan Princes – An Exclusive Excerpt

Hi everyone! Here’s an exclusive excerpt of the Swan Princes: A Christmas Tail –

Sometimes I truly believe that crying is the one human emotion that can express everything words can’t. Crying for joy, crying as one laughs, crying for help…Well, right now, it was none of those things that had me bawlin’.

Crying out in pain as George Pickskip slammed me in the gut, I had to wonder why he had chosen me as his target. The pain was terrible, my eight-year-old self unable to fight back against his massive size. The pure white snow around me was now rolled with dirt and splatters of my blood.

Having never bothered him at school, I didn’t know why George had followed me from the schoolyard and thrown me in the ditch, deciding to beat me into a pulp. The school bully, I suppose everyone had their turn being his punching bag. Today, it seemed, was to be my turn. No matter how I fought back, he was too strong for me to fight off.

“No one will save you now,” he crowed, pulling a huge wad of my hair out. Tearing the bow from my hair, he sneered and wrapped a hand around my throat as I tried to worm away. “I’m going to make you so ugly that no one will recognize you when you get home!”

He laughed, pulling back his fist to slam me in the face again as I cried. But then he was torn off of me.

Sitting up in shock, I saw another boy tackle him to the ground, and a much bigger one. He beat George with a ferocity that shocked me; kicking him in the gut and then hauling him up by the shirt collar.

“You don’t touch her!” the boy roared, slamming a third, furious punch into George’s jaw. Blood splattered from his lip, splitting as George fell to the ground.

George gave up struggling with a cry and curled in on himself, trying to edge away from the onslaught. The boy let him go; George running away, wailing like a girl at his defeat. My savior stared after George, spitting in the snow after him and turned back to me.

My mouth dropped open in surprise. It was Odetton DePrynce, my father’s boss’ son. Where had he come from? Had he followed me back from school? He had never paid me any attention before.

“Why did you save me?” I asked tremulously, shrinking a little and wondering if he had come to beat me up, too.

An eyebrow went up as he looked down at me, seeming surprised by the question. His eyes narrowed, and filled with some emotion I didn’t recognize. Then he smirked. “Because I’m the only one allowed to bully you. That’s why! Now get up. We have a long walk back.”

As he picked up my bow and put it back in my hair for me, I couldn’t help but stare. Hazel eyes that swallowed my soul met mine, Odsie taking his sleeve and wiping off blood from a cut on my cheek. “You’re a mess. We need to get you home. You coming?”

But as Odsie kindly extended his hand to help me up, something happened that would change my life forever. I took his hand, wanting to never let go as his wrapped around mine. Looking up at my savior, my heart warmed in a way that it never had before.

That was the day I fell in love with Odetton DePrynce.

Burn – An Excerpt From Wings of Caligo

“I knew I had gone too far in a millisecond. I was in way over my head but I wasn’t complaining.

I was surprised when the spark I could usually see in his eyes turned to a full-on burn. It wasn’t the ‘bait taken’ type of look I had been expecting. It was something else, something deeper, ignited within him. It was completely intimidating to me and yet it wasn’t. I was trapped in his eyes, just like I had always been trapped by his soul. They were trying to tell me something, but I was too lost in the alarming feeling of losing control.

In that moment Dare left absolutely no more question about what he wanted. He was eyeing my lips with open desire, flames glowing bright within their green depths. The air thickened around us and time stood still as I forgot how to breathe. I don’t know how long we stood there, transfixed. He seemed as unable to move from that moment as I was; that is until his eyes came up to mine, daring me to respond in kind.

I was being seduced by the urge to break my own rules, the ones I had hastily created to protect him. I wanted to go for it, finally let go and have what I wanted. It would be so easy to reach out and let it happen. It was tantalizing me. All of the reasons I knew for hanging back were evaporating in the back of my mind. All of the reasons except one…”

Sneak Peek At ‘Wings of Caligo’

Hello and happy Tuesday! Whew, what a week it has been so far! My internet was out all weekend, so I’m still catching up with all of you. But as soon as I got it back, I had to bring you what I had previously promised!

Here’s the exclusive preview from my upcoming novel ‘Wings of Caligo’, book one in my ‘Legends of Arestina’ series. I hope you enjoy it. I’ll be posting more teasers in the coming weeks, so stay tuned!

Wings of Caligo The Prologue…

***

Nothing could have prepared me for this. My heart pounded in terror as the truth hit me. I was done for.

Blood curdling howls spilt the night as I tore through the dense forest undergrowth, trying to escape my fate. The death crawlers were right on my tail now, hunting me to the ground and screaming for my blood. I pushed my legs to go faster trying to outrun them, but it was too late.

I should have listened to my father when he said not to go out at night. I had snuck out here to the forest thinking I would be safe to watch the rising moon. How wrong I had been. Now I was running blindly in the dark for my life.

Tree branches hit me in the face as I tried to escape. The death crawlers’ lime green eyes were made for seeing in the dark. Mine couldn’t see two feet in front of me let alone see where they were. The beasts had come up behind me and attacked without warning. I knew they were chasing me down, but who knew how close they were to catching me. But then I didn’t need to question it anymore.

I cried out as a force slammed into my back, throwing me to the ground face down. I whimpered as its disgusting panting rang in my ears, sniffing up and down my neck. A low growl sounded as the rest of the pack caught up. They were all around me now, preparing for their meal.

Slowly lifting my head, I saw thirty sets of lips drawn back over their teeth. Poisonous green drool leaked down from their jaws, echoing the equally venomous toxin in their claws. Their leathery bald pink and black skin reflected the moonlight and they closed their wings, settling down after the chase. They thought they had caught me. They thought they were going to enjoy their meal. They were probably right.

I tried to sit up, but I was pushed down into the mud as the alpha dug its claws into my shoulder. I was too scared to cry out as they raked my arm, leaving bloody marks all the way down. This was the end of me and I knew it. I was good as dead. Within a minute, my body would go into shock from the poison and shut down. But oddly enough, that was the last move they made to kill me.

I sat up in confusion as the alpha moved off of my back and sat down, eyes narrowed with a growl. The rest echoed that noise sitting in unison, watching me with unnervingly glowing eyes.

It hit me then that they were waiting for me to die. Death crawlers never left their victims alive. So if they weren’t going to eat me, what were they planning to do? There was only one explanation. They had been sent to kill me, probably on the orders of the King of Caligo. That’s where they had come from; over there in that barren wasteland, across the Divide. They had come for the princessa; that being me.

But there was one snag in their plan. I didn’t seem to be dying. I looked down at my arm, seeing with shock that the marks on my skin were fading. In a few seconds, they were gone, leaving only jagged red scars in their place.

I gulped as another growl passed through the hunting pack, all watching me heal with unblinking eyes. They seemed just as astonished with my healing as I was. But the leader wasn’t done with me. It couldn’t fail its master by leaving me breathing. It stalked toward me, a low snarl on its jaw.

In that moment, my life flashed before my eyes. I had only lived seven short years, happily unaware of the danger that lurked in this forest. Being a garden fairy, my days were blissfully happy, playing with my friends and the creatures of the flowered fields. Those days were now to be cut short by my own stupidity of venturing out into the woods alone.

But also in that moment, a new power surged through me: a will to live. And into that will surged an ability I had never known.

I collapsed forward onto my elbows, my back erupting into mind-bending pain that had nothing to do with the enemies surrounding me. The pain seemed to be directed by a force inside my own mind that I had never experienced before. It screamed for vengeance and exploded out of my control.

My limbs started to elongate, fur sprouting from my hands. My bones jolted in new directions as I disappeared entirely, this new force taking over my being. An animalistic feeling gripped me and it was calling for the destruction of my enemies. The urge to shred them limb to limb took over and by the time I stood tall in this new four-footed form, it came to fruition.

The crawlers all stood stunned as I threw my head back into a raging howl, warning them of their oncoming demise.

I leapt onto the leader and tore off its wing, dragging my sharp claws across its throat. To the rest that didn’t run came similar fates, their neon purple blood splattering to the forest floor. They breathed their last breaths at my teeth and claws. I showed them no mercy. By the time I was done, they barely resembled the same creatures that had surrounded me moments before. Mangled corpses surrounded me, satisfying my inner animal and personally repulsing me.

I stared around, now coming back to my own mind, horrified by what I had done. Yes, those things had been planning to kill me, but I had all but shredded them into pieces. I backed up with a low whine, now hearing that it wasn’t like my own voice. It was that of a dog’s, high with fear.

Even stranger was the instinct to chase down the rest of the crawlers who had all but fled from my blood lust. What was I?! I was no garden fairy anymore; dark black fur over my skin and ears pointed up toward the sky. Looking back at myself, I saw a long black tail in the same color over my back. In my horror, snapping my jaws together, I realized what I was.

How had I become a wolf? A low whimper broke from my throat as I panicked. The world spun as I collapsed, my consciousness giving out to the fear. I disappeared into the void, mind recovering from the ordeal. But what I didn’t know was that this was only the beginning of my journey. Life as I knew it was about to end, the truth coming to light. Nothing would ever be the same.

A New Teaser From War Machine

War Machine: Destiny in the Shadows

A Science Fiction Adventure Novel by Maggie Lynn Heron-Heidel

Only eight days left until War Machine is out! Here’s the new excerpt I promised you all with a touch of romance…

“…His eyes shone down at me as I breathed unsteadily, trying to drag air in to my rapidly shrinking lungs. I battled with my desire to run and the desire to surrender to him entirely. I could feel my heart wildly thumping in my chest and I could have sworn it skipped a beat or two. I hoped he couldn’t feel all this through the bulletproof polymer.

“You can say ‘no’,” he whispered, sounding as though he wished I wouldn’t.
I opened my mouth to protest but the words died in my throat. Maybe they came out as a whimper; I don’t know. I wasn’t paying much attention to my reaction now as much as I was his rapidly descending lips. My eyes drifted closed and I could feel his breath on my face.
It was a shock to me that I wanted his contact so badly. He was right. I did like him. I did like the way his arm was holding my body and his hand gently twisted up into my hair. I so badly wanted to know what it felt like to be loved. My lips trembled with anticipation and want. But the contact I suddenly longed for never came…”
