Chapter One – The New England Desert
Rain

A lone finger hit the floor. Viscous blood spattered over my boots.
“Where are they?!”
“I don’t know!” McGevin lied with a scream, struggling fruitlessly against where his wrists were bound to the chair. The portly, balding man’s belly jiggled over his pants as he tried to squiggle away from my blade. He screeched as I stabbed it into his thigh, driving it in deep.
I rotated the blade while it was still lodged in his flesh. His third scream echoed around the grimy mobile office, turning to whimpers. He gritted his teeth as I ripped it out, lowering the edge toward his fingers again. Fingers that dangled over the arm of the wooden chair, left exposed.
“Lie to me again and they all come off,” I hissed, my voice rasping over my scarred vocal cords. The sound was especially frightening to the notorious slaver, despite the fact he didn’t know my identity. He could only suspect who stood before him. My face was obscured beneath the cowl of my hood.
“We don’t have them!”
The man in the muslin cloak behind me cringed as another of McGevin’s fingers hit the floor. Blood squirted from his knuckles. The finger bounced ever so slightly, then landed on the carpeting next to the first appendage.
“Please! No more,” McGevin begged as I went for his other hand. “They’re hidden in an obscured root cellar behind the cistern! Please don’t kill me!”
Few things are more satisfying than watching a slaver lose his nerve. Especially if I walk away with his human property while he continues to beg fearfully for his life.
I backed away with a sinister smile. “Good. Now why did we have to be so difficult?”
